About the Havanese

For more information regarding the breed standard, please visit the Havanese Club of America website.

HISTORY OF THE BREED
The Havanese is thought to be Cuba's only native breed, and most information points to the fact that it was developed sometime prior to the 17th Century.   This breed came to the tropical island of Cuba with some of the first settlers and evolved into a happy companion dog with long, heat-tolerant hair to accomodate the climate.  It is also reported that these toy dogs were originally companions to the aristocracy and were given as special gifts rather than sold.  It appears that the breed's ancestors can be traced back to the Bichon family.

APPEARANCE
The Havanese is part of the Toy Group.  It measures 8.5 - 11.5 inches at the withers and usually weighs less than 14 - 15 pounds, although there is no weight limit mentioned in the breed standard.  It is covered by long, wavy, non-shedding hair and can range in colors from black, white, cream, chocolate or any combination of those.  The texture of the coat resembles silk in that it is extremely soft and light.

TEMPERAMENT
The Havanese were bred primarily for companionship.  They generally have sweet, happy expressions which are truly indicative of their joyful and loving spirits.  They are social dogs who love to be around other dogs, cats, or children.   They are extremely loyal to "their people," and yet they are able to attach equally to all members of the family.  Havanese are very playful and, although they are small enough to do well in an apartment, they will love you very much if they get a good romp outdoors on a regular basis.

HEALTH
Although small, the Havanese is surprisingly sturdy and overall very healthy.  Like most purebred dogs, they can have some genetic problems, therefore it is important to have the appropriate health screenings.  This breeder conducts all appropriate health tests, and any breeder you choose should be able to say and prove the same.   When the dam and sire are appropriately health tested, the chances of having a problem with a puppy are greatly reduced.
